Patrin Skycaller was born to floatstone farmers in the west of New Kolland. He was bookish for a dragonborn, thanks to an outbreak of mummy rot as a child that sapped his strength, and soon developed a sarcastic streak. When he was eight, his parents were forced to sell him into slavery to keep their farm, an act for which he still resents them, even though as an adult he can appreciate the difficult situation they were in.
The night before he was due to go to market, however, the slave caravan was hit by a cluster of meteors. The slavers’ caravans were completely destroyed, but the only damage done to the slave caravans were enough to free them. Most of the slaves were shellshocked, and babbled about fire in the north and wind in the west, but one, an old priest, recognised the meteors as being sent by the Star Dragon, an ancient god of Good that was thoroughly out of fashion in the arcane magocracy of Gilantri. The old priest had been sure the meteors were sent for Patrin, and that the Star Dragon had recruited him for a purpose yet unknown. They escaped together, but the priest was unable to travel far. Patrin promised on the old priest’s deathbed that he would seek out the priest’s order, and would serve in the old priest’s parish in Bergdhoven until the Star Dragon called again.
Now Patrin is serving his compulsory military service, but the Star Dragon will have need of him sooner than he thinks…
